The time has finally arrived: something I wrote is being published!
As some of you may recall, I mentioned how I graduated from a little program where I obtained my certificate in written storytelling through the Story Center in partnership with Metropolitan Community College. What I hinted at, though, and can finally share in full details, is that as a graduate, they will be publishing my short story, which I was required to write as a part of my coursework, through their imprint [Woodneath Press] in their annual anthology of local authors!
The anthology is Community Voices IV and the book launch will be June 21, so mark your calendars!
My included short story will be RABELLAH AND THE CARPENTER: A MYTH OF ADA’MAH. It is a fictional fairy tale set in a fantasy secondary world of my own making; my mythopoeia, if you will. Based on Jewish mythology, it tells the story of a stranger—a carpenter—who is befriended by a young woman, but she is suddenly abducted one day by an ancient monster. He then seeks to rescue her from its malevolent clutches and bring her back home, and meets his destiny along the way.
It is also my version, or retelling, of the Jacob and Rachel story from Bereshit [Genesis], but within my own mythical world I’ve created (for which I am also currently seeking representation via my full-length manuscript).
Woodneath Press is a library-as-publisher model in that, per their website, it focuses on “local authors and local content.” While this provides local artists with the unique opportunity to find a home for their work which might otherwise be overlooked by more traditional publishing methods, it does present a tricky format for my non-local readers to obtain a copy of my story to read.
Here’s how you can read my upcoming publication:
- If you want to purchase a physical copy of the book for $5 USD**, then you will need to reach out to the publication manager for Woodneath Press.
- If you want to purchase an E-book, then details will be forth coming!
- If you want to simply borrow the book, starting in July, since it is being published by a library and that’s what they do—they lend books—then you can check it out at the Mid-Continent Public Library in the KCMO area.
- For my non-local and especially international readers, you will be able to borrow the E-book using Interlibrary Loan.
- The above link is for use if you are already a card holder with Mid-Continent Public Library. I am unfamiliar with this option, so use it as an example.
- Interlibrary Loan should be available through your local library, which will allow you to request the title through your own library via WorldCat. If this is too confusing (because it’s obvious I have no idea what I’m talking about and wasn’t provided enough details), contact your local library and mention either Interlibrary Loan or WorldCat. They should be able to figure it out! Librarians are sweet and love to help.
- **All proceeds go towards supporting the Story Center.
All this leads me to my final big reveal: you will find my short story under the name J. Lynnette Dunning. (*gasp* I know—so shocking.)
There you have it! I have a short story, RABELLAH AND THE CARPENTER: A MYTH OF ADA’MAH, coming out next month and the book launch will be June 21.
